JQ: Could you mention a prominent young artist from our community?
AR: If you allow me, I will mention more, because it’s hard for me to name just one. The first is Alejandra Estefanero, a singer and also a composer I’m working with; she is very talented and incredibly creative. As a singer, she has amazing potential and a lot of room to grow. She is already standing out, and with time, she will stand out even more. I’ll mention Johan Lazo, a guitarist and composer who lives here. He is very talented. Then there’s Víctor Sotomayor, a pianist and composer, also very talented, especially with jazz music, like Johan; although they also compose other types of music, such as Afro-Peruvian, for example. Sofía Carrasco, a composer and saxophonist, also has a lot of talent both as a saxophonist and a composer, and she is developing something very interesting. Luis Fernando [Ruiz-Pacheco] is a violinist and orchestra conductor, but he focuses more on composing, with his own style and way of seeing music. The latter, Johan, Víctor, Sofía, and [Luis] Fernando, are members of Opus XXI.

Abstract: While it is true that there are some reviews on choral music in Puerto Rico (such as those by Luis Olivieri), there are currently no aesthetic analyses of any compositions by Maestro Ramón Morlá Trenchs, let alone discussions on their musical significance for Puerto Rican music. Therefore, this article, after presenting some biographical information about Maestro Morlá Trenchs, aims to explore the musical context in which one of his works, Misa Carmelitana, was composed, identify the aesthetic influences present in this piece, and, finally, highlight the contribution of this mass to Puerto Rican academic music.
